Did you know that 8,000,000 tons of plastic gets dumped into the ocean every year. That is the equivalent to 5 plastic garbage bags per foot across the entire world. Roughly 22,000,000 pounds of that plastic garbage goes in to our great lakes and rivers.
Here are a few things that can be done to help with ocean pollution:
According to National Geographic, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic garbage and trash in the ocean. All of that sums up to roughly 269,000 tons of trash that just floats on the surface, but now, what's under the surface? To answer that question, there's about 4,000,000,000 plastic microfibers per square kilometer under the ocean surface.
